How to Start a Podcast for (Almost) Free

Starting a podcast is expensive, right?

Wrong.

It can be very expensive, but it doesn’t need to be. A high end XLR microphone like the Shure SM7B, an audio interface and an editing software like Adobe Audition can launch you into a high cost of production pretty quickly. However, a professional-sounding podcast is absolutely within your reach for as little as $30.

There are plenty of reasons why getting a podcast off the ground can be difficult — and we’ll tackle those on this page over time! But the initial expense does not need to be the headache you might think.

Let’s break it down into three key categories:

  1. A hosting site
  2. Editing and Recording Software
  3. Hardware

Hosting Site

Podcasts are not uploaded directly to podcast platforms. You’ll need a host platform where you’ll upload audio and then it is distributed to the major outlets like Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

At this point, almost every host service has a free plan. In most cases, that plan gets you in the door with limits to how many hours of audio you can upload, monetization ability and analytics.
